Background on Gulliver

It's interesting that Swift writes a background on Gulliver to make it appear as if Gulliver is writing a story based on his actual experiences. Any ideas on why Swift does this, besides just making the novel more interesting?

  1. I think Swift wrote the background so that the reader can define who Gulliver really is based on how they want to view Gulliver. For example, one could say that Gulliver is adventurous for his travels, but that is them forgetting that Gulliver did not ask to land on the island where Lilliput is situated. Swift seems to be playing on our imagination (by giving us background information) to create a plethora of scenes for which only the individual reader can view properly and enjoy.
